Uber will invest $1.25 billion in Rivian to deploy up to 50,000 autonomous robotaxis. The electric vehicle manufacturer expects initial deployments to begin in San Francisco and Miami in 2028, with plans to expand to 25 cities across the U.S. Canada and Europe by the end of 2031.
Rivian said the first deployment phase would include 10,000 fully autonomous R2 robotaxis.
“This partnership with Uber will help accelerate our path to level 4 autonomy to create one of the safest and most convenient autonomous platforms in the world," Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe said. “The scale of Rivian's growing data flywheel coupled with RAP1, our in-house inference platform and our multi-modal perception platform, make us incredibly excited for the rapid advancement of Rivian autonomy over the next couple of years.”
The companies committed an initial $300 million investment following signing, subject to regulatory approval, and retain the option to negotiate the purchase of up to 40,000 more autonomous R2 vehicles starting in 2030.
The robotaxis will be available exclusively through the Uber platform.
Last December, Rivian unveiled its third-generation autonomy platform, which it plans to debut in its R2—currently scheduled to launch in late 2026.
The platform features a mix of sensors and includes 11 cameras (65 megapixels), five radars and one LiDAR, powered by Rivian's in-house chips. It also collects information from the sensors to provide Rivian's systems with real-world data.
