Topping the list, the Tesla Model 3 has tallied seven recalls that impacted approximately 429,000 vehicles and sparked more than 8,000 monthly online searches. The Model S finished runner-up with 10 recalls, roughly 372,000 affected cars and nearly 6,000 web searches per month.
The Nissan Leaf, Volkswagen ID.4 and Chevy Bolt EV rounded out the top five.
An eCarsTrade auto expert said the data indicates electric vehicles experience breakdowns less commonly seen in gas-powered cars. For example, the source cited suspension and axle failures due to EVs weighing 30% to 40% more than gas vehicles.
Other issues involve electrical wiring and short circuits in high-voltage systems, as well as camera and visibility system malfunctions caused by software crashes or moisture affecting digital screens and sensors.
"These problems stem from intense competition pushing manufacturers to launch EVs quickly, sometimes before fully testing new systems," the source said. "But as the industry matures and manufacturers learn from these early mistakes, recall rates should decline. EVs have fewer moving parts than gas cars, which means that in the long term, they should be less problematic and easier to maintain.”
