Honda has issued a massive recall impacting hundreds of thousands of Civic vehicles and the root cause is, you guessed it, a mixup with a fence in Italy.

The automaker warned that 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels that were sold as accessories could detach from the vehicle due to a manufacturing error. As the company points out, having the wheels fly off your car can result in "a loss of control, increasing the risk of a crash or injury."

Most Read on IEN:

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the issue can be traced back to a supplier’s factory in Italy. A separation fence that was being used to keep the finished and unfinished products from mixing together was removed during the installation of new equipment. That resulted in some unfinished products being mistakenly placed in the finished product storage area and then shipped without completing the seat press-fitting and final inspection process.

Honda said that as of late last month, there are no warranty claims or reports of injuries. And the factory that had trouble with the fence shut down in 2023.

Nevertheless, the automaker is asking consumers to bring potentially impacted vehicles into authorized dealers for inspection and repairs.

The recall impacts more than 400,000 Civic vehicles from 2016 to 2021, but Honda estimates that fewer than 0.1% have a defect that may cause the wheels to detach. Still, if your Civic happens to be in small percentage, taking it in is better than finding out the hard way.

Honda has issued a massive recall, impacting

hundreds of thousands of Civic models,

00:05.650 --> 00:08.539

and the root cause is, you guessed it.

00:09.359 --> 00:13.600

A mix up with a fence in Italy.

00:15.350 --> 00:19.790

The automaker warned that eighteen-inch

aluminum alloy wheels that were sold as

00:19.790 --> 00:23.909

accessories could detach from the vehicle due

to a manufacturing error.

00:24.069 --> 00:29.559

As the company points out, having the wheels

fly off your car can result in,

00:29.709 --> 00:35.529

quote, a loss of control, increasing the risk

of a crash or injury.

00:35.790 --> 00:38.669

According to the National Highway Traffic

Safety Administration,

00:39.060 --> 00:42.750

The issue can be traced back to a supplier's

factory in Italy.

00:42.939 --> 00:49.180

A separation fence that was being used to keep

the finished from unfinished products from

00:49.180 --> 00:53.459

mixing together was removed during the

installation of new equipment.

00:53.619 --> 00:58.659

That resulted in some unfinished products being

mistakenly placed in the finished product

00:58.659 --> 01:01.380

storage area and then shipped without

completion.

01:01.655 --> 01:05.036

The seat, press fittings, and final inspection

process.

01:05.236 --> 01:10.695

Honda said that as of late last month, there

are no warranty claims or reports of injuries,

01:10.956 --> 01:15.276

and the factory that had trouble with the fence

shut down in 2023.

01:15.475 --> 01:21.316

Nevertheless, the automaker is asking consumers

to bring potentially impacted vehicles into

01:21.316 --> 01:27.491

authorized dealers for inspection and repairs.

The Recall impacts more than 400,000 Civic

01:27.491 --> 01:34.272

vehicles from 2016 to 2021, but Honda estimates

that fewer than 0.1% of those vehicles

01:34.431 --> 01:38.692

are impacted.

Still, if your Civic happens to be in that

01:38.692 --> 01:43.802

small percentage, taking it in is better than

finding out the hard way.

01:43.972 --> 01:46.452
