PAL-V, makers of the three-wheeled Liberty gyroplane, recently reached a major milestone as it pursues full-scale industrial production. The RDW, the Netherlands Vehicle Authority responsible for the approval and oversight of vehicles, has granted PAL-V its Initial Assessment, officially recognizing PAL-V as a certified automotive manufacturer.

The approval means PAL-V can start making type‑certified, road‑legal vehicles at its manufacturing facility in the Netherlands in accordance with European automotive standards.

The Initial Assessment confirms that PAL-V has adequately documented and implemented the measures, quality controls, and procedures under the European Conformity of Production (CoP) requirements. The approval is essential for any manufacturer aiming to produce road-legal vehicles, and a foundational requirement for PAL-V’s unique FlyDrive platform.

PAL-V's manufacturing approach must meet the stringent certification requirements of both the automotive and aviation industries combined. While the RDW focuses on the automotive side, it is a crucial building block to obtain Production Organization Approval for aviation.

PAL-V has grown its customer base beyond private buyers, attracting professional and government sectors to is flying car concept. Unlike human-transporting drones or other flying vehicles, PAL-V’s FlyDrive technology is designed to seamlessly integrate air and road travel, where pilots and passengers can benefit from true door-to-door mobility, according to the company.
